Bringing French Finesse to Napa Valley

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Christophe Paubert’s approach as a winemaker at Stags’ Leap Winery from Napa Valley is more traditional compared to other winemakers in the region. This is why he fits in well with the Stags’ Leap, a wine brand with a history dated back from 1893. Moreover, he brought years of experience from his hometown in France to the Californian winery.

Paubert visited Jakarta last week to introduce his wine to the Indonesian public. Some of their flagship products include the Napa Valley Petit Syrah, a rich and aromatic red wine; Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with its subtle flavor; Napa Valley Chardonnay, a fruity and acidic white wine; Napa Valley Viognier, white wine with a sweet floral note; and their signature “The Leap” Cabernet.

The Leap Cabernet is made from grapes planted in Stags’ Leap 85-acre vineyard and produced in limited quantity. “3,500 cases per year, whereas the Napa Valley Cabernet, is around 30,000 cases,” he explained.

According to Paubert, their wine compliments Asian dishes very well. “The floral and acidity (of the wine) compliment the spices in Asian food,” he said.

He further said that despite people’s assumption that wine produced from outside of Europe is New World wine, Californian wine is not New World. “It has more than 100 years of history of winemaking in the region, it’s not New World,” he asserted.
