TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has inaugurated a Director of Taxation Intelligence at the Directorate General of Taxes, Peni Hirjanto, on Tuesday, November 29, 2016. At the inauguration, Sri Mulyani mentioned the importance of the position carried by Peni.

“For the last four months, based on our data management and how we treat the taxpayers properly, we do have to possess counter information showing that they comply to their obligation,” she said on November 29, 2016.

According to Sri Mulyani, intelligence data is supposed to be utilized by the Tax DG in order to obtain information on the number of taxpayers and if they have fulfilled their obligation. Their [the Tax DG] ability in gathering intelligence data is important in order to show their credibility when they meet with a taxpayer that denies their taxes.

“But, intelligence data is not a means of extorting the taxpayers. It is also not a tool to enrich an individual or a group at the Tax DG,” said the Minister.

Sri Mulyani instructed Peni to uphold the institution’s authority. And also to build an intelligence system that is credible and recognized by the taxpayers. “Not to (make yourself) be feared since you can use the taxpayers' crucial information that you have to extort them,” she said.
