TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones is hopeful that Indonesia could join Japan, India, China and Malaysia as Wales’ key partners in Asia, an official of Indonesian Embassy in London Dindin Wahyudin said on Wednesday, following the Indonesian Ambassador to the UK Rizal Sukma working visit to Cardiff in Wales.
Jones expects Indonesia, whose trade value with Wales currently stands at only 5 million pounds, to encourage its students to study in Wales universities.
Wales is renowned for its research and development of renewable energy, human sciences and journalistic news. There are only 40 Indonesian students of all degrees currently studying in Wales.
In the meeting, Indonesia and Wales discussed opportunities to cooperate in renewable energy, food industry, maritime affairs, cultural heritage and education.
Sukma said that Indo-UK partnership has been stronger than ever, which in turn would require improved framework for their bilateral cooperation beyond Jakarta and London.
She also met with Wales Parliament deputy speaker Ann Jones. Both have agreed to step up interparliamentary ties.
To strengthen education cooperation, Sukma met with Cardiff University vice president Prof Nora de Leeuw and explained the progress of Indo-UK cooperation before lecturers and students.
