TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of artists peformed Prambanan Ramayana ballet before 400 audience and diplomats at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Office in Paris, France, on Tuesday evening.
Ambassador/Alternate Permanent Delegate of Indonesia to UNESCO T.A. Fauzi Soelaiman said that the ballet performance was part of the commemoration of 25 years of inscription of Borobudur and Prambanan temples on UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as 20 years of Sangiran Early Man Site’s inscription on the same list.
Ambassador/Permanent Delegate of Indonesia to UNESCO Dr. Hotmangaradja Pandjaitan said over the past 25 years Indonesia have benefited from UNESCO in perserving the two cultural heritage sites.
“To express gratitude to UNESCO, Indonesia commemorates the inscription at UNESCO Office in Paris,” he said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Hotmangaradja said that Ramayana’s story, orignated from India, has been interpreted in different ways in different countries and is well-known to most Asian countries.
Last night’s Ramayana’s story was inspired by the sculptures on Prambanan Temple, hence the name Ramayana Prambanan.
Temple operator PT Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan dan Ratu Boko president director Edy Setijono said that inscription of the Borobudur and Prambanan temples on the UNESCO World Heritage List may encourage people to not only visit the sites but also to preserve them.
