TEMPO.CO, Makassar - Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy promises to announce a Minister Regulation that erases teachers’ mandatory 24-hour school teaching.
Muhadjir said that teachers ideally should spend time teaching for a maximum of 8 hours each week. “I’s like to straighten the older rule. It’s not relevant anymore for our teachers currently,” Muhadjir said on Wednesday, November 16, 2016.
Muhadjir travelled to Makassar in order to inaugurate a coordination meeting and treaty signing.
According to him, the weekly 24 hour school teaching rule tends to make teachers difficult to concentrate on their duty. Teachers would come in and out of a number of schools just to meet their weekly target. “If the conditions are like that, when can the teachers be professional and focus on developing the students in each school,” Muhadjir said.
For a number of years, teachers are obligated for a weekly minimum of 24 teaching hours, which was the requirement in order to receive a teacher’s grant. The requirement also applies to honorary teachers.
According to Muhadjir, in the future, teachers would only have to teach in one school only. He urged teachers to continue to push themselves and understand the importance of their profession. Muhadjir views teachers as the main profession from all other existing professions. “The quality of teachers in the future won’t be determined by the amount of teaching hours but on how consistent they can teach,” Muhadjir continued.
