TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Research Director at Setara Institute, Ismail Hasani, assessed that the police shouldn’t involve members of House of Representatives’ (DPR) Legal Commission in the initial investigation. The discourse of having DPR members involved through the Case Supervisor Team was brought up in police plans upon the initial investigation of Basuki ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama in the alleged religion defamation case.
According to Ismail, involvements of the Legal Commission members isn’t justified because Senayan parlement members are not investigators nor are they law enforcers. “DPR’s involvement will only add further politicization and diminish the investigators independence,” he said on Wednesday, November 9, 2016.
Ahok’s case is currently in its investigative phase, for example the November 4 protest, which demanded Ahok to be punished. Ismail admits, the public protest created the opportunity to conduct an open initial investigation in order to control the investigators independence.
Other than that, Ismail thinks that DPR’s plan in establishing a Case Supervisor Team isn’t right, because DPR isn’t allowed to specifically supervise a case.
