TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Employees and workers union of Bank Danamon stage a protest at the bank's headquarters Friday, October 28. The act is causing traffic jams near and around the Bank Danamon Tower in Kuningan, South Jakarta.
The police had to close off the slow lane, forcing motorcyclists to enter the fast lane along Rasuna Said Road.
"It's been closed since 3 o'clock this afternoon," one of the building's security guard said.
Traffic congestion goes as far as the Menteng Flyover until Plaza Setiabudi.
Hundreds of Bank Danamon's employees rallied and marched from Tugu Tani to the office tower. The employees joined in the Bank Danamon Workers Unions (SP) are protesting the bank's policies and demanding their rights.
Some of the demands include canceling the mass layoffs and canceling the reduction of pension funds.
"Many of us have worked for decades, and now all of the sudden the Bank's management decides to fire us using a variety of reasons," said Mohammed Afif, secretary general of the workers' union.
The workers union's demands appeared after Bank Danamon conducted a business transformation. According to Vice Director of Danamon, Muliadi Rahardja, the transformation was done to maintain business continuity in the midst of a competitive business climate. Danamon`s business transformation was done through various initiatives, such as business restructuring and consolidation. The initiatives impacted on operation network and workers.
"For the workers who are affected (by the business transformation), the management prioritizes to give chances for filling vacant internal positions, giving necessary training, and also giving chances for workers to apply for early retirement," said Muliadi.
