TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Representative of the Australian cattle exporters expressed their fear upon Indonesia’s new trade regulation that would use imported Australian cattle for breeding as reported by media on Monday, October 24, 2016.
Early this week, a representative from Australia came to Jakarta to discuss the new policy that was pitched by the Minister of Trade Enggartiasto Lukita last month. Based on the policy, one out of six living imported cattle must be used for breeding (breeder cattle).
Australian exporters believe that the move can potentially threaten the continuance of the cattle breeding industry in the long run because Indonesia is one of Australia’s main clients of live cattle exports.
Meat & Livestock Australia Limited (MLA), in their statement last month, said that there were no cattle exported to Indonesia on September due to the negotiation on breeding regulations.
Meat & Livestock Australia Limited (MLA) is a marketing organization, research, and developer for the red meat and breeding animals industry in Australia.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Australian Board of Cattle Exporters Simon Crean has met with the Minister of Trade Enggartiasto Lukita in an attempt to resolve the problem before President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo visiting Australia next month.
