TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nadhalatul Ulama (UN) Central Board (PBNU) chairman Said Aqil Siradj asked the people to avoid ethnic, religious, racial and intergroup (SARA) sentiments in the campaigns of the upcoming Jakarta gubernatorial election in 2017. He urges the people to respect every candidate competing in the election.
"Let’s respect all of them, wait on General election Commission, those who will be the official candidates, go ahead and conduct campaigns," Said stated after attending National Santri Day in National Monument (Monas) open field, Jakarta, on Saturday (22/10).
He also said that NU will participate in the politics of the election. However, he confirmed that NU will supervise the potentials of SARA sentiments in the election. "NU has nothing to do with politics. NU always fight against SARA issue," Said added.
Political situation in the capital city is going to heat up in welcoming campaigns of regional election. DKI Jakarta General Election Commission has verified the candidates of governor and deputy governor for 2017-2022 office.
