TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Institute Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR) demands the government to put an end to lash law in Qanun Jinayat, or Aceh's Islamic Criminal Bylaw which contains violations to international law and national criminal law.
"Lashes are used as a punishment to a wide range of criminal acts including selling alcohol, engaging in sexual relations outside marriage (zina), and engaging in affectionate contact by an unmarried couple (khalwat)," ICJR Executive DirectorSupriyadi Widodo Eddyono explained in Jakarta on Monday (23/10).
Supriyadi went on by saying that on October 23, Qanun Jinayat has been implemented for a year in Aceh. Previously, Aceh Government and Aceh Provincial Legislative Council (DPRA) issued Kanun (Regional Regulation) Aceh No. 6 of 2014 on Jinayat Law and it was officially implemented on October 23 2015.
Under the law, there are 10 main criminal acts regulated in Kanun and it also includes 46 new criminal acts in which the perpretrators are sentenced by lashes.
