TEMPO.CO, Kupang - A 5-magnitude tectonic earthquake struck the North Central Timor (TTU), East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Friday, October 21. No immediate reports of any damage.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) Kupang chapter analyzed that the 5-magnitude quake occurred at 4:50 am local time. The epicenter of the quake was at a latitude of 9.17 degrees south and a longitude of 123.96 degrees east, 84 kilometers below the sea.
Kupang BMKG official Sumawan said that the earthquake had not been followed by aftershocks. However, he had suggested the locals keep calm and continue to follow instructions of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and BMKG. “Those who live on the north coast of TTU are urged to ignore rumors because the earthquake has no potential to cause a tsunami,” he asserted.
