TEMPO.CO, Depok - The Maritime Sovereignty Deputy at Indonesia`s Coordinating Ministry For Maritime Affairs Arief Havas Oegroseno said that Indonesia must revamp its maritime legal system. Especially in creating legal instruments in regional areas since there are many more criminal offences occurred at sea, rather than just a poaching.
“There are many criminal offences in Indonesia’s waters. Therefore, the legal instrument in Indonesian regions must be strengthened,” Arief said on Thursday, October 21, 2016.
He said that Indonesia has met with 22 nations in order to form a regionalized legal instrument. The first meeting was held on May 22, 2016, and the second one was held last week in Yogyakarta.
According to Arief, the supervision of Indonesia’s seas has been pretty good, but the implementation of its judicial process must be improved. Applying law on fisheries alone would not be enough, he went on. “If there is a person being enslaved, human trafficking law must be applied onto the perpetrator,” he said.
Many problems exist in the sea, Arief explained, such as the unreported fish administrations, unmatched reports, fish transferring at sea, along with the use of bombs and cyanide that are not environmentally friendly.
