TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of members of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) launched a protest on Friday, October 14, 2016, at the City Hall in Jakarta, demanding Police to arrest Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama
"We urge police to arrest Ahok. Otherwise we will kill him," FPI chairman Muhammad Rizieq Shihab in his oration when leading the protest.
Rizieq conducted an oration in front of the City Hall with thousands of FPI followers across the Capital. He called on the mob to forcefully enter the City hall.
"The President defends Ahok, the law enforcers stand still. Kill Ahok!," Habieb said.
Police attempted to ease the tension, but the FPI followers were furious when police played an Islamic song. They lobbed mineral water bottles to police cars parked in front of the City Hall.
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Mochammad Iriawan and Jakarta Military’s commander Maj. Gen. Teddy Lhaksamana came and calm Rizieq down.
“We hope that the protest will go peacefully, and the protesters can disperse in an orderly manner,” Iriawan said.
Ahok has been reported to police for allegedly defaming the Qu'ran when he quoted the Al-Maidah 51 verse during a work visit to the Thousand Island in September 2016.
