TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Political, Legal, and Security Minister Wiranto said that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo will form a task force assigned to eradicate illegal levies in government institutions. The team is expected to carry out its duties starting next week.
"The team is called Saber Pungli [Illegal Levies Clean Sweep]," Wiranto said after a meeting with President Jokowi at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 12, 2016.
Wiranto added that the team will serve the task under the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs' supervision. Wiranto explained that the National Police and other relevant institutions will be involved.
Wiranto said that the operation conducted at the Transportation Ministry on Tuesday was initiated as the first step to eradicate illegal levies. In the near future, the team will launch similar operations in all sectors.
Wiranto revealed that public would be able to participate in the effort by directly reporting illegal levy practices. Wiranto viewed that such a practice was triggered by overlapping regulations. Wiranto hopes that the policy package related to law reform will simplify the regulations and prevent illegal levies.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, along with National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian inspected the operation. Jokowi came to the Transportation Ministry after receiving a report in relation to illegal levies from the National Police. Jokowi instructed government institutions to remove officials who collected illegal levies.
