Seven Nobel Laureates will Visit Indonesia Next Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Seven Nobel Laureates will come to Indonesia from January to March 2017. They will be keynote speakers in the 6th ASEAN event series "Bridges – Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace". "The program deals with the overall theme of building a culture of peace and development in a globalized world, bridging Indonesian and foreign perspectives," said Uwe Morawets, Chairman of International Peace Foundation that facilitate the event at a press conference in Jakarta, Wednesday, October 12, 2016.

The topics of event series will cover issues in the fields of politics, economy, science, culture and the media.

The seven Nobel Laureates who will come are Eric Stark Maskin, American economist who was awarded Nobel Prize for Economics in 2007, Jose Manuel Barroso, the 11th President of the European Commission who received the Nobel Prize in 2012 on behalf of the European Commission, Sheldon Lee Glashow who was awarded Nobel Prize for Physic in 1979, Sir Richard J. Roberts, Nobel Lauereate for Medicine in 1993, Robert Fry Engle who were together with Michael Armellion  received Nobel Prize for Economics in 2003, Jerome Isaac Friedman who received Nobel for Physics, and Peter Agre of the John Hopkins University School of Medicine who was awarded Nobel Prize fro Chemistry in 2003.

According to  Morawets, the aim of 'Bridges' is run the event series is to facilitate and strengthen dialogue and communication between societies in Southeast Asia with their multiple cultures and faiths, "as well as with people in other parts of the world to promote understanding and trust."

The 6th ASEAN "Bridges" series follows the "Bridges" series which the International Peace Foundation has already hosted in Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Singapore.

The Indonesia event series will be continuously run in some universities in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and Bali.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla who is the Honorary Chairman of "Bridges" in Indonesia welcomes the event series. Besides, the event can be a dialogue event between East and West, he also hopes it will open the new horizons for students and lectures in the universities where the event will run.  "I hope the dialogue will be usefull," he said at the press conference.
