TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said Indonesia is confident in its bid to become a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council in 2016-2019. The ICAO Council membership election will be held Tuesday, October 4, 2016, participated by all ICAO members.
“A successful ICAO Council membership bid will put us in a better position to share our experience in meeting aviation safety and security standards, bearing in mind Indonesia is the world’s biggest archipelagic state.”
According to Budi, Indonesia is confident because the nation’s aviation safety and security standards, and aviation environmental protection have improved. Indonesia achieved five things in the past couple of years, including having its aviation safety rating upgraded to category 1 status by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has lifted a ban on flights from and to Indonesia, Budi said. In addition, Indonesia met 95 percent of ICAO safety standard in late 2015.
Budi added since 2014, flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has consistently been winning 5-Star rating from its global partners. It has also won international awards as Best Economic Class Airline and ranked first in World’s Top-Ten Airlines.
“The achievements of the flag carrier indicate that Indonesia has managed to provide high quality flight services and improved its global competitiveness,” Budi said.
