Minister: Our Tax Amnesty Better Than Other Countries

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said that currently, the amount of tax amnesty retribution fund based on the asset declaration letter had reached Rp. 67.3 trillion, or 0.65 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Sri said that the number exceeded the number achieved by other countries that have applied tax amnesty program.

Chile, which applies the tax amnesty program in 2015 for example, had only managed to collect retribution fund equals to 0.62 percent of its GDP. Meanwhile, India, which applied the tax amnesty program in 1997, had only managed to collect 0.17 percent of the GDP. Other countries such as, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Spain, and Belgium, had only managed to collect 0.2 percent, 0.17 percent, 0.06 percent, 0.12 percent, and 0.15 percent of the GDP, respectively.

"Calculated from the amount of [asset] declaration, [the retribution fund] had reached 0.21 percent of the GDP. Whereas tax amnesty had only been applied for one period. The number is expected to increase," Sri said on Thursday, September 29, 2016.

Sri said that as of Thursday morning, September 29, 2016, the amount of revenues generated from the tax amnesty program had reached 86.4 trillion. Meanwhile, the amount of retribution fund had reached 58.62 trillion. In addition, revenues from tax arrears and suspension of initial evidence investigation had reached Rp 3.06 trillion and Rp. 320 billion, respectively.
