TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) said the collapse of a pedestrian bridge in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta on Saturday (24/9) is a tragic case.
"This incident indicates that as a public facility, bridge does not meet eligibility, security, and safety standards," said YLKI Chairman Tulus Abadi through a written statement on Sunday (25/9).
Tulus also suspected that many bridges in Jakarta do not meet safety standards.
"Therefore, YLKI urged Jakarta Governor to instruct relevant agencies (for example Public Works Agency) to audit pedestrian bridges in Jakarta," Tulus added.
He also said the audit of pedestrian bridges is very important to provide security and safety for Jakarta residents.
For the record, a pedestrian bridge near Pasar Minggu station collapsed on Saturday afternoon (24/9). Heavy rain and strong winds were suspected as to cause the collapse. Two people were reportedly dead at the scene.
