TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of displaced flood victims in Garut, West Java, began suffering from a number of post-flood diseases.
Health problems that are most common are acute respiratory infections (ARI), gastrointestinal tract, and skin diseases.
"Days after the floods are prone to the development of diseases,” said Garut Deputy Regent Helmi Budiman on Saturday (24/9)
According to him, one of the sources of the growth of the diseases are the stench of dead animals brought by the flash floods.
In addition, inadequate environmental sanitation in refugee camps also contributes to the spread of the diseases, he added.
Therefore, Helmi said that the local government set up 24 medical posts scattered in several affected areas to prevent outbreaks of disease.
“We also provide free medical services to all flood victims to seek at health centers, clinics, and hospitals in Garut, " Helmi added.
