TEMPO.CO, New York - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has officially led the campaign marking of Indonesia’s bid for the United Nation (UN) Security Council non-permanent seat in 2019-2020.
VP Jusuf Kalla launched the Indonesia’s official bid Thursday, September 22, by striking on a gong at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The event, which featured a dinner reception and Indonesian cultural performances, was attended by hundreds of foreign diplomats and the House’s Commission I chairman Abdul Haris.
“Support from other countries have been overwhelming but we will continue to seek [more support],” said the VP as quoted by Antara.
The VP said Indonesia’s main contender for the seat is Maldives, but Indonesia has a better chance to succeed.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said Indonesia adopts the theme ‘The True Partner for World Peace’ in its campaign.
“Because if we talk about Indonesian diplomacy, Indonesia is renowned as an agent of world peace. We have done a lot for democracy. Bali Democracy Forum is one of the world’s largest events. Indonesia’s contribution to spreading the value of democracy has been widely recognized,” Retno said.
The United Nation Security Council consists of permanent members: the United States, the United Kingdom, China, France and Russia, and non-permanent members.
Non-permanent members are alternately elected by voting. Indonesia served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 1973-74, 1995-96 and 2007-08.
