12 National Heroes to be Engraved on New Rupiah Bills

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 12 national heroes will be featured in new rupiah bills that will be launched on the National Hero Day on November 10, 2016.

“The special agenda for this year is the launching of new rupiah bills featuring national heroes. A presidential decree has been finalized,” Hartono Laras, director general for social protection at the Social Affairs Ministry, said in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 21, 2016.

Hartono explained that featuring national heroes in rupiah bills is one of many ways to recognize their struggles.

“They have been declared as national heroes. Therefore it’s our duty to disseminate their heroic values,” Hartono added.

National heroes to be featured in rupiah bills include the first Indonesian President Soekarno and his Vice President Mohammad Hatta in Rp100,000 bill. In addition, Djuanda Kartawidaja and GSSJ Ratulangi will be featured in Rp50,000 and Rp20,000 bills, respectively.

Other national heroes are Frans Kaisepo, KH Idham Chalid, Mohammad Hoesni Thamrin, Tjut Meutia, who will be featured in Rp10,000, Rp5,000, Rp2,000 and Rp1,000 paper bills. Mr I Gusti Ketut Pudja portrait will be engraved on the Rp1,000 coin.

Lt. Gen. TNI (Ret) Tahi Bonar Simatupang will be engraved on Rp500 coin. Dr. Tjiptomangunkusomo and Prof. Dr. Ir. Herman Johannes will be featured in Rp200 an Rp100 coins, respectively.
