TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said that he had received a report saying that a high-ranking police officer, KPS, received money from drug convict Freddy Budiman’s partner Chandra Halim, a.k.a. Akiong. Akiong was the brain behind the trafficking of 1.4 million ecstasy pills from China back in 2012.
“I have received the information from the [National Police’s Fact-Finding] Team. But we will still uphold the principle of the presumption of innocence,” Tito said at the National Police Headquarter in South Jakarta on Friday, September 16, 2016.
Tito added that he would wait for an official report from the Fact-Finding Team in relation to the allegation. He revealed that he would discuss the case with the National Police’s Internal Affairs (Propam).
“If there were violations of the ethical code, we will impose sanctions related to the ethical code. If it was a crime, then we will take legal actions,” he said.
KPS was one of the investigators who handled Akiong’s case in 2011. KPS allegedly received money amounting to Rp688 million (US$52,900) from Akiong, who was sentenced to death by the court.
Tito asserted that he would not intervene the finding issued by the Fact-Finding Team. He hopes that the report was credible and objective.
“I’m leaving everything to the team. I won’t cover it,” he admitted.
The Fact-Finding Team also found fund flows from Akiong to other police officers with amounts ranging from Rp25 million (US$2,000) to Rp1 billion (US$77,000). However, the team could not publish names of the officers yet.
