TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A speed boat erupted in flames at the Padangbai harbor, Bali, Thursday, September 15, 2016, on 09:25 a.m. local time. The incident left two passengers dead and 20 passengers injured.

Chief of Data and Information Center and public relations for Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that the fire was caused by an explosion at the passenger seat that was located at the rear part of the boat. “The explosion happened 10 minutes after their departure.” Said Sutopo. Sutopo explained that the boat only managed to travel 500 meters away from the port.

The Gili Cat 2 carried 35 foreign tourists and four crew members. They were all headed to Gili Trawangan, West Nusa Tenggara and departured from Padangbai Harbor, Bali.

According to the data provided by Pusdalops BPBD Bali, the two people that died in the incident are Venessa Pascual Fernandes, an Italian citizen, and Katrin Zefferer, a British citizen. They were treated at the Sanglah Hospital.

The injured passengers are currently treated in three different locations. One person in Klungkung Hospital, 14 people in Penta Medika Clinic, and 5 Manggis I Community Healthcare.

According to Sutopo the incident is being handled by a joint team that consists of The National.

Search and Rescue Agency, Indonesian Maritime Police Force, BPBD, Public Health Office, and the local community.
