BNPT to Investigate Terrorism Funding Via Marketplace

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chief of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) Comr. Gen. Suhardi Alius said that the BNPT will investigate a report of terrorism funding through the marketplace. The report was published by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK).

"We have a special desk. The deputy for cooperation will clarify this matter," Suhardi said at the Senayan Parliamentary Complex on Thursday, September 15, 2016.

Suhardi explained that the clarification was aimed at exposing whether the funds were channelled by individuals, foundations or institutions.

"At the global scale, the PPATK saw that there is a certain amount of fund. We will investigate it further," Suhardi added.

Earlier on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, PPATK deputy chairman Agus Santoso revealed that funds for terrorists were mostly distributed through online transactions. Agus said that his institution found the suspicious fund flows in collaboration with the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC).

Both institutions found 97 individual and entity transactions worth around Rp 88.5 billion (US$6.8 million) conducted over the last four years. Agus claimed that the funds were used to recruit members, send people to Syria, buy tickets and spread propagandas,
