TEMPO.CO, Denpasar - Fast Boat Gili Cat 2 serving the Padangbai-Gili Trawangan route had an engine fire shortly after leaving Padangbai Port, Karangasem, Bali, causing an explosion that killed two and injured 13.
The incident started when the boat, carrying 35 passengers to Gili Trawangan, left Padangbai Port at 9.25 a.m. After sailing for about 200 meters, smoke came out of one of the boat’s engines.
“We’re currently focusing on investigating the crime scene. The boat has been taken to a dock,” Karangasem Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Sugeng Sudarso said as quoted by Bisnis.com on Thursday, September 15, 2016.
Sugeng refused to provide details of the victims’ identities and the cause of the incident. Victims had been taken to Penta Medica Hospital in Karangasem and Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.
Based on the passenger manifest, 35 passengers of the boat are foreign tourists from Spain, UK, France, Italy, Portugal, and the Indian Ocean Territory. Fast Boat Gili Cat 2 also carried four local crew members.
