TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta-based fashion designer Handy Hartono and Yogyakarta's Lulu Lutfi Labibi have been given the honour as the first Indonesian designers to participate in the 8th Annual Museum Quartier Vienna Fashion Week - which is slated to take place between September 12-19, 2016.
The Museum Quartier Vienna Fashion Week is an annual event that attracts around 10,000 visitors - among which are fashion designers, commentators, fashionistas, as well as the industry's movers-and-shakers from Austria and beyond.
A member of the Information and Public Diplomacy staff for the Indonesian Embassy in Austria, Wina Retnosari, said that around 80 fashion designers - both international and local Austrian designers - are slated to take part in this year's Fashion Week festivities. Handy Hartono and Lulu Lutfi Labibi are scheduled to showcase around 20 designs from their 2017 Spring and Summer collection at Vienna's Museum Quartier.
Handy's design combines the use of shibori dyes and ikat weave patterns from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) to produce his distinctive ready-to-wear collection that he dubs 'The Story of Blue'.
While Labibi - which holds the crown as Indonesia's most sought after fashion designers - will be showcasing Indonesian lurik patterns on the international stage by combining it with traditional batik patterns and draping techniques, which creates unique design and silhouettes that remains comfortable for day-to-day use.
The Indonesian Ambassador for Austria, Rachmat Budiman, said that Hartono and Labibi are the first Indonesian designers to take part in the Museum Quartier Vienna Fashion Week, and are expected to bring a distinctive Indonesian touch that will hopefully grab the attention of the fashion communities in Austria.
Furthermore, continued Budiman, Hartono's and Labibi's collection does not only reflect the achievement and progress that Indonesian fashion designers have managed to achieve - as it also reflects Indonesia's cultural riches and its' tourism potential to the international stage through their designs.
In addition to fashion shows, the Museum Quartier Vienna Fashion Week will also include other events such as business-to-business meetings for players in the fashion industry, as well as product showcases from invited participants.
