TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has confirmed that Indonesians taken hostage by Abu Sayyaf group are in good condition. “Alhamdulillah (Praise to God) they are in good condition thus far,” Retno said Wednesday at the Senayan Parliamentary complex.
Retno was informed about the condition of the hostages from the Director General of Protection of Indonesians during a meeting with the House’s Commission IX yesterday.
Seven Indonesians have been taken hostage by Abu Sayyaf group since June 21, 2016. Two of whom had managed to escape during Philippine military operation on August 17 and 18, 2016.
Retno has confirmed that the efforts to free the hostages continue to be done. She said that the safety of Indonesian hostages is a key point. She claimed that she has been reiterating to Philippine authorities of the importance of freeing Indonesian hostages.
Retno said the message has been received very well and clear by local authorities. “I’ve always said that the safety of Indonesians [is key],” he said.
Families of the victims had earlier expressed their concerns over the safety of their family members. More so because reports said that the Philippine military are currently bombarding the terrorist group.
