TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Legal and Human Rights Council of Muhammadiyah Central Executive Board has urged President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to abolish remission for corruptors. It was one of the recommendations in the national meeting of Muhammadiyah’s Legal and Human Rights Council held on August 26-28, 2016, in Yogyakarta.
“We urge the government to be firm in corruption eradication by no longer giving remissions for convicted corruptors,” said the council’s chairman Saiful Bahri, Sunday, August 28, 2016.
Saiful added that Muhammadiyah community agrees that corruptors are not worthy of remission even though it is regulated in the legislations.
He noted that Jokowi has been inconsistent in keeping his early promises following the provision of remissions for corruption convicts in various holidays.
“During his early days in office [Jokowi] said he would be bold in corruption cases, the facts have proven otherwise, prompting us to make a recommendation on the abolition of remission,” Saiful
In the closing of Muhammadiyah national meeting, the organization has lamented the fact that several major corruptors had been given remissions during the independence day 2016.
