TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A live hand grenade was reportedly found by a street sweeper on Jl. Kapten Tendean in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta on Wednesday morning, August 24, 2016.

The report has since been confirmed by the Head of Public Relations for Jakarta Police, Sr. Comr. Awi Setiyono. "The grenade was found by a member of the Sanitation Agency at around 06:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB)," said Awi to Tempo on Wednesday, August 24, 2016.

Awi said that the grenade was found by Atun - a street sweeper for the Sanitation Agency - who was working across her sector on Jl. Kapten Tendean, when she found a can-like object that was wrapped in a motorcycle's tyre inner tube.

"Upon discovering the grenade, she immediately went to Mampang Prapatan District Police to report her discovery of the potentially explosive object," continued Awi, who then elaborated that at around 06:15 WIB, officers from Mampang Prapatan District Police examined and sealed the scene of discovery before contacting the Jakarta Police Bomb Squad (Gegana) - which then arrived around one hour later.

"Gegana officers managed to determined that the grenade is indeed armed and active - so they immediately secured the grenade and brought it to the Jakarta Police Headquarters to be disarmed and disposed properly," finished Awi.
