Minister Meets Google, Discusses Palapa Ring and 4G Access

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara met Google's top management staff to discuss current government's focus on the acceleration of broadband network development and the efficiency improvement of the national information and communication technology industry.
The meeting with Google's vice president engineering on maps Hugh Williams, product management director Ben Galbraith, and director of GEO NBU lead Suren Ruhela took place at the Communications and Information Ministry in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 10, 2016.
"One of the government efforts to accelerate the broadband [development] was the initiation of the Palapa ring project for west, central and east packages, as well as 4G access improvement," Rudi said in a press release.
Rudi added that Google's apps and contents, as well as other app providers facilitate by Google, must remain free of negative contents, such as pornography.
"Therefore, the partnership with Google must be improved," Rudi said.
In a bid to close the telecommunication access gap in Java and outside Java, the government has planned to develop infrastructures for fiber optic network services consisting of three packages.
The west package will cover Riau, Riau Islands and Natuna Island. The central package will cover Kalimantan, Sulawesi, North Maluku and Sangihe-Talaud Islands. Finally, the east package will cover East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, West Papua and Papua.
