TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), in cooperation with Halal Development Corporation (HDC), is holding e-Halal Forum in a bid to boost halal product development in Indonesia, particularly through e-commerce.

Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Rosan Soeslani said the competition to grab halal product market share is getting stiffer than ever. “Because it’s not monopolized by Islamic countries or Muslim-majority countries,” Rosan told Tempoat Ritz Carlton Hotel, Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta, Monday, August 1, 2016.

He expressed his appreciation to HDC who had initiated the plan for the program. “In order to meet the interest of manufacturers and consumers of halal products.”

Rosan said that increased global demand for halal products is strongly linked with information technology. “Halal product trade has turned to e-commerce model which is rapidly growing,” he said.

He added that non-Muslim countries have also been setting up the infrastructure for halal products to be accepted by the market. Countries such as Japan, the UK, the Netherlands and the United States have been scrambling to grab halal product market share.

Rosan said that sharia economy analysts foresee that demand for halal products will continue to rapidly grow. Business players see that halal labelling is a crucial instrument of marketing in the global market. “A new instrument of marketing,” he said.

Global halal market value reached US$2.3 trillion in 2014 and is expected to reach US$3.7 trillion by 2019. Therefore, Rosan expects Kadin to become the market leader together with HDC. “To face competition in global halal product [market].”
