TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Manor Racing team has confirmed that Indonesian Formula 1 driver Rio Haryanto will partake in the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim circuit despite failing to address his financial shortcomings to secure his seat in the England-based team.
“It’s confirmed, Rio will compete in Germany,” Rio’s mother Indah Pennywati told Tempo Wednesday.
Rio’ manager Piers Hunnisett has also confirmed that the Solo-born driver will hang onto his seat in Formula 1.
“Manor Racing and Rio’s management have worked hard to secure funds for Rio to compete in the entire race throughout the season and will continue [to race],” Hunnisett said.
Earlier, Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi had planned to send a letter to Manor Racing to secure Rio Haryanto’s seat in 2016 season.
According to the ministry official Gatot S. Dewa Broto, the letter would be sent to ensure the commitment of Manor Racing with regards to Rio’s participation in the remainder of the 2016 Formula 1 season.
“On July 18, Manor had asked for confirmation on the backing and sponsorship commitment for Rio through a latter addressed to Menpora (Youth Minister). Manor, in the letter, had given the chance [for Rio] until the race in Budapest,” said Gatot, the Sports Ministry public relations chief.
In the letter addressed to the Sports Ministry, Manor said it might replace Rio with another driver if the Indonesian government fail to provide financial backing.
Rio needs as much as seven million euros to stay with Manor Racing until the end of current Formula 1 season.
