TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives has finally passed the Draft Bill on Patent during a plenary meeting led by House Deputy Speaker Agus Hermanto on Thursday, July 28, 2016. Present in the meeting were Justice and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly and Research and Higher Education Minister M. Nasir.
John Kennedy Azis, chief of the House's Special Committee for the patent draft bill, appreciated cooperation between the two ministries in drafting the patent bill. John hopes that the government would soon disseminate the law "particularly to inventors who have urged the [enacment] of the law."
Yassonna viewed that the new law would be important for inventions in various fields, such as medicine and industry. Yasonna added that the law on patent protections is important in addition to the law on intellectual property rights.
"This [law] will also protect micro, small and medium enterprises," Yasonna said.
Yasonna added that the passing of the bill would encourage public to make other inventions. In addition, Yasonna called on inventors not to depend on natural resources, but on human resources instead.
Nasir said that the patent law would potentially increase added values and free Indonesia from being dependent to natural resources.
"Inventors will have added values for this," Nasir said.
