TEMPO.CO, Kupang - A 3.9-magnitude earthquake jiggles Eastern Sumba District in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), at 6:32 a.m. local time.
“A 3.9 Richter Scale quake occurred in East Sumba District, Sumba Island,” Head of Data and Information Section to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Geophysics Class 1 Station Kupang, Sunawan, told Antara Wednesday morning.
The earthquake, with no potential of a tsunami, occurred 10.01 degrees South Latitude and 120.84 degrees East Longitude with the epicenter located 55 kilometer Southeast of East Sumba, NTT, at a depth of 10km above sea level.
Nearly all areas in NTT has often been hit by earthquakes, but not on a huge scale.
However, the intensity and location of the quake could happen three times in a day, so society is always asked to be aware of the matter.
Sumawan says the earthquake recently occurring in NTT is because the province known for its island-based province is included in the Indonesian tectonic system.
“So earthquakes would frequently occur in Timor, Alor, Sumba, Flores, and other islands in NTT,” said Sunawan.
Society is also advised to always be aware of small earthquakes continuously occurring in NTT.
