TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Agus Salim, lawyer of Filipino drug convict Mary Jane Veloso, has insisted on filing another judicial review claiming that he possesses a new legal fact about Mary Jane's recruiter. To this date, Mary Jane has filed two judicial reviews with the Supreme Court.
"We will file another judicial review upon a legal process in Philippine," Agus Salim said on Tuesday, July 26, 2016.
Mary Jane has been excluded from the list of third round of executions to be carried out in the near future. Yogyakarta District Court head Tony Tribagus Spontana confirmed that Mary Jane's execution had been suspended, awaiting for a trial of her recruiter in Philippine.
The last judicial review was filed in early 2015 after President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo rejected Mary Jane's clemency application in late 2014. Later, the Supreme Court rejected the second appeal for a judicial review based on Supreme Court’s Circular Letter No. 7/2014, stating that a convict can only file a judicial review once.
Mary Jane, who was arrested in early 2010, received a death sentence during a trial at the Sleman District Court in late 2010. She escaped the second round of executions as her recruiter was brought to trial. Mary Jane is currently detained at the Wirogunan Correctional Facility in Yogyakarta.
"We are still waiting for the legal process in Philippine, and we respect the convict's legal rights," Yogyakarta Prosecutor's Office spokesperson Zulkardiman said.
