TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Terrorism expert Noor Huda Ismail said that terrorist group has adopted a method of recruiting new members through social media. "If terrorists previously recruited via congregation, now it's done via social media," Noor said during a discussion and screening event of the 'Jihad Selfie' movie in Semarang, Tuesday, July 26, 2016.
The 49-minute duration movie, which was created by Noor, reveals facts on how the Islamic State (IS) radical group recruited its members. The group employs social media to recruit its new members.
'Jihad Selfie' revealed that Indonesian citizens who joined IS in Syria and Iraq were recruited through Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Skype, among other social media websites.
Akbar, one of the character in the movie, admitted that he was interested to join with IS after seeing one of his friends holding an M-16 assault rifle in a photograph on Facebook.
"He looked awesome and galant, like a soldier or a member of the Special Force," said Akbar, who was also present in the discussion.
Akbar however, cancelled his intentions to join IS after thinking about his parents.
