TEMPO.CO, Vientiane - Indonesia has urged countries that owns nuclear weapons to immediately sign and ratify the Treaty of Southeast Asia Nuclear Free Zone (Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone / SEANWFZ).

Indonesia also said that it is important to ensure Southeast Asia as a region that is free of nuclear weapons.

The announcement was made by Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi in a meeting with the SEANWFZ Commission in Vientiane, Laos, Saturday (23/7).

The meeting, held at the National Convention Center, was chaired by the Chairman of ASEAN in 2016, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Laos Saleumxay Kommasith.

"Indonesia fully supports the SEANWFZ Treaty. Indonesia also currently is formulating a nuclear safety legislation, which implements the  SEANWFZ action plan that criminalizes the stock piling of nuclear weapons," said Retno told reporters on Saturday.
