TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 1,354 people have been displaced after floods hit the North Konawe regency, Southeast Sulawesi, on Saturday (16/7).
Flooding occured due to heavy rains since Thursday that caused rivers overflow.
Data collected by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) shows that about 735 homes were flooded and thousands of people fled into the official residence of North Konawe Regent North and some into school buildings.
"A total of 12 villages in three districts were inundated with floodwater of up to 1 to 2.5 meters," said BNPB Head of Data Information and Public Relations Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said in a statement on Saturday (16/7).
Areas that were flooded include Andowia district (Andowia village, Anggolo Hipo village, Puusuli village, Labungga village, Anggomate village, Laronanga village, Larobende village, Puuwonua village, Almolameh village, Lamundowo village, Banggarema village, Lahembua village), Asera district (Wanggudu village, Puuwanggudu village, Wanggudu Raya village, Tapuhuatu village), and Lasolo district (Otole village, Tinobu village).
According to Sutopo, North Konawe BPBD, along with the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) and the police are still on the ground to evacuate residents and calculating the damage.
The BPBD has also set up two shelters, tent shelters, food distribution and health services.
