TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-General Election Commission (KPU) commissioner Hadar Nafis Gumay has officially been elected as the acting KPU chairman. Hadar was elected in a plenary meeting held with other five KPU commissioners, namely Ida Budhiati, Sigit Pamungkas, Arif Budiman, Ferry Kurnia Rizkiyansyah and Juri Ardiantoro.
Sigit explained that the decision was made unanimously and chosen based on consensus in the meeting. “He [Hadar] has become the acting KPU chairman, the post which will be held until the election of a permanent KPU chairman,” Sigit said at the KPU office in Jakarta yesterday, July 12, 2016.
The KPU chairman post had been left open after the KPU chairman Husni Kamil Manik passed away on Thursday. Husni passed away at age 41 from diabetes and asbestosis.
According to Sigit, a permanent KPU chairman will be elected in a plenary on Monday. Meaning that Hadar will become an acting chairman until Monday.
Sigit explained that the acting chairman will perform administrative duties. In addition, the acting chairman will represent the KPU in interacting with other institutions. Whereas the KPU regulations will still be signed by the permanent KPU chairman.
To fill the void in commissioner post left by Hadar after Husni’s death, the KPU will soon send a letter to President Jokowi. Hadar explained that the President has had a new KPU member lined up after a fit and proper test undertaken by the House of Representatives in 2012. “The President will appoint and inaugurate the person,” he said.
