TEMPO.CO, Bekasi-The Bekasi administration predicted that the population in Bekasi would increase by about 10,000 people due to post-Eid al-Fitr urbanization.
“Industrial zones are main destinations for newcomers,” Ali Syahbana, head of the Demography and Civil Registry Agency, said on Monday, July 11, 2016.
According to Ali, thousands of companies in seven industrial zones in Bekasi would attract newcomers from Central Java and other areas. Moreover, a relatively decent minimum wage that amounts to Rp3.3 million (US$246) per month would be attractive for residents outside Bekasi.
Ali added that the number of population in Bekasi had reached 3.3 million people. He called on newcomers to complete their residential documents and apply for temporary stay permits.
“We will collect data on newcomers after the Lebaran holiday,” he said.
Ali predicted that 10 districts in Bekasi would be main destinations, such as densely-populated South Tambun, West Cikarang, and Central Cikarang, for newcomers to seek jobs.
Bekasi deputy regent Rohim Mintareja said that his administration would prioritize local people before newcomers, since the unemployment rate in the regency had reached to more than 20,000.
Therefore, Rohim called on unskilled newcomers to cancel their plans to move to Bekasi in order to prevent the unemployment rate from increasing.
