TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-Some 915.2 thousand foreign tourist visiting Indonesia in May 2016 is the highest total in any month in the country’s history.
Tourism Ministry Arief Yahya said the number of foreign tourist arrivals has risen significantly in May 2016, most of which are from China.
“Chinese tourists [arrivals] have consistently increase with an average of 20 percent growth,” he said in Jakarta, Friday, July 1, 2016.
Foreign tourist arrivals in May 2016 rose by 7.37 percent compared to that of same period last year.
The number of Chinese tourists who visited Bali has surpassed Australian tourist who had been dominating tourist arrivals in Bali.
“At present, Indonesia is the destination for most of outbound travel from Australian, earlier it was New Zealand,” he said.
Arief has welcomed the fine performance of Indonesian tourism that continues to improve. “I’m pleased that tourism [sector] perfomance is getting better, hence it is expected to achieve the figure of roughly one million [tourists] from July onwards,” he said.
The government aims to attract 12 million foreign visitors until the end of the year.
