TEMPO.CO, Brebes-Brebes Police's Head of Traffic Management Unit, Adj. Comr. Arfan Zulkhan Sipayung, said that Brebes Police will not issue traffic violation tickets for minor offenses - for example, missing a wing mirror, or overloading a vehicle - during the Ramadan homecoming season, on 'humanitarian grounds'.
"We want everything to run as smooth as it could be, so issuing traffic violation tickets will only be a last resort measure," said Arfan at East Brebes Tollway Exit on Wednesday, June 29, 2016.
Arfan explained that traffic violation tickets will also not be issued for motorcyclists who do not have their helmets on, as well as carrying passengers in pick-up trucks. "We will only warn offenders, but we will not issue any tickets," he said.
That said, continued Arfan, this should not be construed by motorists as a green light to drive recklessly throughout Brebes during the homecoming season - as Brebes authorities will still enforce existing penalties for serious offences that might harm other road users. "If an offence causes an accident, or any disorder on Brebes' roads, be assured that we will enforce strict penalties," he said.
Arfan also called on motorists - especially motorcyclists - to obey traffic signs, as these regulations were put in place to ensure the safety of all road users. "Please wear a helmet when riding on a motorcycle, and bear in mind that the back of a pick-up truck is meant for carrying goods - not passengers," he said.
