TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-State-owned logistics company (Bulog) is aiming to import 9,000 tons of beef from India until end of July 2016 in a bid to stabilize domestic beef price.
Bulog Procurement Director Wahyu in Jakarta on Monday, June 27, said that his office has been instructed to import beef from India following a decree of the Agriculture Ministry no 2356/kpts/Pk450/f/0.6/2016 on Business Unit of Boneless Carabeef Import into the Territory of the Republic of Indonesia.
“The decree of the Agriculture Ministry was issued on June 10 and we have been instructed to import beef on June 13, including import from India,” he said.
However, Wahyu has yet to confirm if his office will import beef or carabeef from India. Therefore, he side is still communicating with the country’s exporters recommended by the Agriculture Ministry.
Earlier, the Agriculture Ministry has approved carabeef imports to Indonesia from four states of India.
Technical recommendation on animal health has been issued after the Agriculture Ministry deployed an audit team to analyse the risk posed by cattle quantitative import and ruminant animals products from India. The audit include, among others, evaluation and verification of animal health and surveillance system and zoning.
The audit team comprised of the Expert Commission on Animal Health, Veterinary Public Health and Animal Quarantine. Carabeef will be supplied from 10 slaughterhouses in four states, namely Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana.
Muladno guarantees that the technical requirement of Indian cattle has been met. In addition, the Indian slaughterhouses have complete and modern infrastructure.
According to him, India has been exporting carabeef to the Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia.
“Therefore, halal aspect is a must. If [the halal aspect] was not met, the slaughterhouse will be marked as not recommended in the audit result,” said Muladno in Jakarta on Wednesday.
