TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BIN) Commissioner General Budi Waseso said Indonesia is still in a state of drug emergency.
According to him, there are a variety of factors, one of which is the high number of drug users.
"The number of users has exceeded four million people," Budi said in Jakarta on Sunday (26/6).
Another factor, Budi Waseso added, is that there are still many new types of drugs that have not been detected in Indonesia.
He explained that there are 44 new types of drug in Indonesia, with 18 of them have been included in the regulations of Minister of Health, while the rest are still being researched.
The number of users and the number of new types of narcotics, according to Budi Waseso, is exacerbated by the percentage prevalence of narcotics in Indonesia, which is still high.
"According to a survey in 2015, the prevalence rate was 2.20 per cent of the 4 million people who try to take drug," he said.
Although Indonesia is still in a condition of emergency drugs, Budi said they are optimistic BIN can overcome it as some steps have been done, from prevention to enforcement measures.
