Jokowi`s Livestock Ship Transporting 500 Cows During Ramadan

TEMPO.CO, Kupang - Livestock vessel Camara Nusantara I prepared by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) return to carry 467 cows from Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Wednesday, June 22, to meet the national need on beef during Ramadhan and Eid.
Besides Kupang, Jokowi’s ship will also carry 33 cows from Sumba Island to maximize the capacity of the ship of 500 cows.
PT Pelni East Nusa Tenggara Operasional Manager Iwan Basuki expect that the cow transport can provide solutions and suppress meat prices in Java Island during Ramadan. Therefore, NTT became one of the government’s hope to supply beef to Java Island.
“The government is having difficulty supplying beef towards Eid due to the significant increase in demand for beef,” Iwan said Wednesday, June 22.
The ship will carry 467 cows with each weighing 300kg in Kupang and 33 cows in Waingapu, East Sumba. “There are 500 cows transported from NTT,” he said.
Jokowi’s ship will return to carry cows from NTT in the next two weeks in order to meet beef demand in Java Island.
The NTT Livestock Service recorded a cow population in NTT of approximately 890,000 – 900,00, and in 2016, NTT provided shipping quota of cows to outside of region as much as 65,000 cows.
