TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has requested for the development on Special Economic Zone (KEK) Sorong in West Papua to be accelerated.
"This closed meeting will discuss the acceleration of special economic zone development in Papua, particularly in Sorong, West Papua," Jokowi said during a meeting on Tuesday, June 14, 2016.
The President urged related parties to have a clear understanding on the project's location, zoning, land, infrastructure, transportation, and institutional aspects.
"Please also calculate whether KEK is really necessary in Papua, because this will be related to the supply of raw materials in the region," Jokowi said.
Jokowi also reiterated that the establishment of a KEK in West Papua will be closely related to market access. "Electricity is also important in supporting the implementation of KEK. That is why preparations for the KEK [project] must be well-calculated," Jokowi added.
Jokowi also underlined concerns on possible institutional issues and overlapping authorities in relation to the establishment of KEK.
"Our experience on Batam should also be a common concern. I do not want institutional issues to become an obstacle and causes overlapping authorities,” Jokowi said.
