TEMPO.CO, Gresik-The newely appointed Indonesian national team coach Alfred Riedl attended the match between Persegres Gresik United against Sriwijaja FC at Petrokimia Stadium, Gresik, Sunday, June 13, 2016.
Riedl sat in the VIP section while seriously watching the Torabica Soccer Championship match. He occasionally wrote down notes on a piece of paper.
Riedl were also seen discussing with an assistant sitting next to him. He then rushed out of the stadium 20 minutes before the final whistle. The match was ended with a 2-1 victory for Persegres over Sriwijaya FC.
In a press conference, Persegres coach Lestiadi had his say on Riedle’s presence. According to him, his players were motivated by it. “Indeed, my players wanted to show to Riedl that they deserve national team call-ups,” he said.
Having been appointed by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), Riedl is preparing the senior Indonesian team for the AFF Cup 2016 in November to December. The AFF Cup will be held in two countries: Myanmar and the Philippines.
Riedle’s appointment has been a surprise because he was not in contention for the job of the national team coach. It has also sparked criticism from many.
