TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly said that chemical castration punishment would not be given to all sex offenders.
"This (castration) is an alternative punishment. It’s not the only one,” he said on Saturday (28/5).
The minister added that the decision to give chemical castration punishment is in the hands of judges and judges will review facts before imposing the sentence.
For example, a pedophile that has committed sexual crimes repeatedly can receive a maximum of 20 years in prison; while for a perpetrator who has caused trauma to his victims may be given a life sentence.
Yasonna also said that castration would be given as an additional punishment in line with the consideration from the judges.
"A judge cannot impose the sanction (chemical castration) to all sexual criminals,” he said, adding that the government is still discussing the considerations that can be used for judges to impose the sanction.
