TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-Indonesian Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti opened the 16th Senior Official’s Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) ASEAN organized at Borobudur Hotel Jakarta on Tuesday, May 24, 2016.
“This year’s SOMTC is held in Indonesia from May 23 to 27,” Badrodin said during a press conference at Borobudur Hotel in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The result of the session will be reported to the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC).
Badrodin explained there are 11 main transnational crime issues being discussed in the meeting, namely counter-terrorism, cyber crime, trafficking in person, illicit drugs trafficking, money laundering, arms smuggling, sea piracy, international economic crime, wildlife and timber trafficking, people smuggling, and illegal fishing issues.
“The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the 11 main issues on the trend, modus operandi, prevention procedure, and cooperation evaluation in the ASEAN region with dialogue partners,” said Badrodin.
Besides being attended by 10 ASEAN countries, this year’s SOMTC is also participated by several countries and other international organizations approved by ASEAN countries as dialogue partners, including Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, United States, India, New Zealand, Canada, European Union, and Asia Australia Program on Trafficking in Person (AAPTIP).
“The session will also discuss several border issues that are rapidly growing following the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) 2015,” Badrodin said.
According to Badrodin, the AEC became one of the ways that allows transnational crime and border entry. The result of the session is expected to increase the collaboration in the exchange of information, building network, and respond to all threats and to determine strategical steps in transnational crime issues.
