Indonesian Short Film Wins Award at Cannes Film Festival 2016

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-Indonesian short film called “Prenjak, In The Year Of Monkey” won at the Cannes Film Festival 2016. The winning of the movie created by a director from Yogyakarta, Wregas Bhanuteja, was announced in Cannes, France, on Friday, May 20, 2016.
Prenjak was sent to Cannes by the Film Promotion and Development Center (Pusbang Film) of the Ministry of Education and Culture. The film received 'The Leica Cine Discovery Prize Cinema de pa critic Cannes 2016 award'; it is the highest award from de la critic cinema or Critic’s Week Cannes for a short film category.
Education and Culture Minister Anies Baswedan welcomed the achievement. “The award for best short movie from Cannes Film Festival in France is such an honor,” Anies said in a statement Friday.
Anies expects the achievement of Prenjak film, which its announcement coincides with the National Awakening Day (May 20th), could be the spirit of film and creativity revival of the nation.
“Prenjak, In The Year Of Monkey” was played three times in the Cannes Film Festival 2016. The movie tells story about a Yogyakarta girl in the 1980s who is struggling to be independent economically to support her family.
Not only did it receive an award, according to the Pusbang Film’s report, Prenjak also has catched 300 audiences’ attention during its premiere on May 15-16 at the Miramar Theatre, Cannes, France.
